Moon slipped the access card from around his neck, then waved it across the black card reader attached to the wall. A small green LED light illuminated and a solid metal chunk resonated in the air as the door unlocked.

The door was noticeably thick, and as it automatically opened outwardly, air rushed from around the seams, followed by an automated announcement of a female’s voice repeating a pre-recorded message:

Please evacuate the facility. There has been a breach. At this time, the CDC asks that you leave your offices, laboratories, and any other rooms within this facility and immediately head toward central decontamination.

Moon let the card hang around his neck and entered a new section of hallway, just past the massive door.

The team followed Moon deeper within the facility, trying to ignore the audible message repeating through the ceiling speakers.

Up on the right was a cork board, which Doctor Carter immediate ran to. Her eyes searched the board, fingers pointing toward individual cards that looked like business cards, each one with a name of a doctor and where that said doctor was headed to within the underground facility.

Ryan approached her. His temper was short fused, and he needed answers.

Moon had pushed past the board and stood staring down the hall, and at the end of it, he could plainly see a dried, bloody palm print smeared across the left wall, just before an open area. Milliken, Chow, Walker, Von, and Yorgey all spread out behind Moon, keeping security around their team leader as Ryan began talking with Carter.

“Tell us what we are walking into, Doc, and don’t bullshit me!” Ryan demanded of Ava. He was not happy, but his breather obscured the emotions painted across his face. In his time in the military, he had learned that nearly every level of command would conveniently leave out or omit pertinent information before missions. “Political bullshit” was what he called it, but they referred to it as need-to-know information, always ending the conversations with him that he was not in need of knowing.

“Mark, wave us into the first room here on the right,” Carter told Moon. Then he turned to face Ryan. “Inside there, we can talk. It’s the PPE supply room. It’s secure and sealed. I’ll tell all the men what I know as we get dressed.”

Moon turned around and waved the access card across the black box mounted flush against the concrete wall. The door opened outwardly, much like the larger hallway door, with a whoosh of air, guided by a thick, hydraulic arm at the top of the door.

The team all moved inside the room, but just as Ryan stepped through the threshold, his comms opened in his ear with Allman’s voice. “We are off target, back en route to base, how copy?”

In the moment, Ryan was relieved that at least his last two snipers were off the objective and headed for a safe zone.
